For most of her life, Marion Whitermore struggled to manage her depression. Today, at age 84, she is proof that life can start at any age.

Tyler was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and has suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. Now in high school, Tyler went from terrified tot to thriving teen.

Robert endured a disastrous 10-year struggle with sobriety and responsibility. He felt doomed to a life of chaos until he found his way to sobriety.

Marion Whitermore

M._WhitermoreMarion served as a missionary in Trinidad for more than 10 years. In 1963, she had an emotional break. She was sent home, along with her three children, to seek help from Penn Foundation. At that time, she pursued treatment but was not able to recognize or speak about a secret she had been carrying for many years. In the ensuing years, Marion managed on her own but says she never really felt alive. Many people are not able to break through their depression because the root cause is never discovered.

The most recent chapter in her life story began at a party where friends and relatives had gathered to celebrate her life. They gave her a handmade book of memorable pictures and beautifully-written letters describing how much she was loved and admired.

"Who are they talking about? Surely it's not me! There I was, 82 years old, and I suddenly realized I didn't know who I was," remembers Marion. "I reconnected with a Penn Foundation psychologist, and with the right medication and skilled one-on-one coaching, I believe I have finally mastered the source of my depression. Life couldn't be better!"
